Battle of the Minds!

On February 1st, four cadets from our debate team entered into the SCISA Debate Tournament in the novice category. At the start of the year, the cadets in the debate team were told they would have an in-house end of semester debate to determine who would be selected for the SCISA tournament as only up to four could enter into a category. The four cadets selected to go were determined through team scores calculated by a panel of teachers who volunteered to judge our in-house tournament.  The four cadets who were able to attend the event were Gabriel Berger-Slowinski, Sean Prater, Tyler Willson, and Matthew Wong.

The cadets were divided into two teams of two, and at the start of the semester, SCISA announced the resolution that teams would be debating on. This year’s resolution was as follows: “The US will substantially reduce military aid to Taiwan.” As soon as the resolution was announced the four cadets got to work on researching both the pros and cons of this resolution, and prepared their arguments. They practiced their arguments many times, both in and out of dedicated club time, writing and rewriting their debates several times. Even though the four of them would be split into two teams, they still pooled together their resources and helped each other determine their arguments. When it finally came time for the tournament, they competed in five twenty to thirty minute rounds, not knowing if they would argue for the pro side or the con side until the start of each round. At the end of the competition it was announced that Camden Military Academy Team A, cadets Tyler Willson and Matthew Wong, had won the novice level tournament! To add to this achievement, Cadet Willson also won the award for  Top Individual Scorer in his category! This was all four cadets’ first year debating, and they did phenomenally. Congratulations to all four of them and congratulations to our two winners!

Next year, Matthew Wong and Sean Prater will be leading the debate team and competing on the varsity level. We look forward to what they will achieve next year!

CMA Uniform Standards

This school year we decided to implement a change to our traditional Cadet dress code.
The Cadet class uniform that has been worn for years consists of a light grey shirt and
darker grey pants with a black stripe up the sides of the legs along with either a flat dark
grey overseas cap or the round blue dress hat. There is also a black, all weather jacket
they can wear with their class uniform when it rains or when it is cold. We also have a
military style camouflage utility uniform we call OCP (operational camouflage pattern)
which is the US Army approved JROTC uniform. After having a discussion with many
of our older Cadets about the uniforms it was decided to try a change from tradition.
One major reason is the ability to keep the uniforms clean. The class uniform has to be
sent out for dry cleaning which is an additional cost and is normally a two week
turnaround, whereas the OCP uniform can be washed in the on campus laundry facility
and returned the next day. The OCP is more comfortable to wear according to other
Cadets and most like how it looks. Lastly, the OCP uniform is not as tailored a fit as the
class uniform so it fits longer as your Cadet grows and doesn’t have to be tailored as
your cadet becomes taller during his time here. The average cadet can wear a set of
OCPs much longer than a set of class uniforms, saving money in the long run. In the
past, the cadets would normally wear the class uniform four days a week and the
JROTC Army OCP uniform once, on Leadership training day. This year we implemented
the new schedule so that the cadets wear their OCP three days a week. This change
also allows cadets who have interests in serving in a military branch the opportunity to
experience a form of daily military lifestyle. After this first semester of trying out the new
uniform schedule, we have decided to switch back to a schedule closer resembling the
traditional uniform schedule wearing the class uniform three days a week and the OCPs
for only two days a week. They will continue to wear their OCP uniform on Leadership
training days and on Fridays. No matter what uniform your Cadet is wearing, the
mission of Camden Military Academy has not changed. We push your Cadet to achieve
his maximum potential and gain the educational foundation to succeed in college and
life as a productive, contributing citizen.

CAP takes to the sky!

This past Saturday, CMA’s Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadron went glider flying at Bermuda High Gliderport! Located 30 minutes from Camden, five cadets, including myself, flew in an unpowered glider for over 15 minutes. We learned about how such flying is possible, and how it’s so efficient. The ride started with a tow plane pulling us up to around 3,000 feet, and then detaching us from its tow cable, allowing us to glide down freely. The best part was when the instructor let us fly the planes ourselves, which was totally different from the powered aircraft I’m used to.

After we landed the glider, we spoke to the other pilots at that airport and learned a lot about aviation. Once everyone flew, we drove back, making a stop at McDonald’s for lunch. Only through CMA and their extra curricular programs were we able to have opportunities like that. The Civil Air Patrol offers many opportunities, too, like Search and Rescue, First Aid, and of course, flying. I’d like to thank LTC Melberg, a retired Air Force Pilot and CMA teacher who drove us and was the reason we were able to go.

CMA Hits the Slopes!

This past January, I had an unforgettable ski trip to Winterplace Resort in West Virginia with my friends from Camden Military. The excitement began before we hit the slopes as we picked our hotel roommates, setting the stage for a weekend filled with laughter and good vibes. Staying at the hotel added a cozy touch to the trip, giving us a warm place to unwind after long days out in the cold. The food vouchers we received made meal times effortless and fun—we indulged in everything from burgers to hot chocolate. Sharing these moments with friends made it even better, whether we were joking around in the hotel or comparing our skiing highlights over dinner.

Winterplace was stunning, a true winter wonderland that felt like something out of a movie. The snow-covered slopes stretched endlessly, and the views of the surrounding mountains were breathtaking. The atmosphere was welcoming, with friendly faces everywhere—from the resort staff to other skiers who were thrilled to be there. I’ve always loved skiing, and this trip reminded me why: the adrenaline, the challenge, and the sheer fun of gliding down the slopes. It was super cold, though but the chill only made the hot chocolate breaks and warm food even more enjoyable. This trip was more than just skiing; it was about making memories with great friends in an unforgettable setting. Winterplace gave us a time we’ll always treasure.

Snow Day at Camden!

The snow day at Camden Military Academy was really fun. The whole campus has a totally new atmosphere when the snow starts falling. It’s like the campus shifts, and everything feels quieter and more peaceful. Classes were canceled for the first half of the day, so we got to sleep in and enjoy the extra time. I even saw some drone shots of the school from above, and it was so cool to see the whole place from that angle. Seeing Camden covered in snow, looking completely different from how it usually does, is something everyone should get to experience at least once.

The cadets were super excited the morning the snow came. They were all itching to go outside and play in it. Once we finally got the go-ahead to head outside, everyone practically sprinted out the door. Some kids jumped into snowball fights, laughing and throwing snow around, while others started up a game of football on the snow-covered field. It was cool to see how, even though it was a snow day, the cadets still found a way to have fun and enjoy the day. Snow or no snow, it’s all about making the best of whatever comes our way!

Guest Speaker for MLK Day

Camden Military Academy celebrated MLK Day on campus in our chapel with a guest speaker on Monday. Our Keynote speaker was Mr. James Felder of Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Felder is a veteran of the U.S. Army. After his time in the military, he dedicated his life to working for Civil Rights. He has authored several books, to include one entitled, “I Buried JFK.” During his speech, he talked about his time in the military and most notably serving as a pallets bearer for the late president,  John F. Kennedy as a member of the prestigious Honor Guard. After his speech, he fielded several questions from our students and staff and spoke with them one on one. We would like to extend a big Thank You to Mr. Felder for coming to speak to our young men.

CMA Marksmanship Team Takes Aim

The Camden Military Rifle team meets early on Wednesdays at 6:00 AM and again on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. During practice, cadets rotate in groups to fire air rifles at targets positioned 50 feet away, testing their precision and focus. After each round, they retrieve their targets and analyze their accuracy, aiming to improve with every shot. Beyond marksmanship, the rifle team fosters leadership skills, following a structured chain of command inspired by the Army Infantry.

The team is led by SFC Bradshaw, one of the Tactical Officers (TACs) on our campus, whose extensive experience and guidance help shape cadets into disciplined and skilled marksmen. SFC Bradshaw ensures that practices are both productive and engaging, instilling values of dedication and teamwork in every participant.

As we gear up for regional competitions later this year, stay tuned for updates on our progress!

JV Basketball Scores a Win!

On Monday, November 18, The Camden Military Academy Spartans JV Basketball team had their season opener at home against The King’s Academy out of Florence, SC. The Spartans returned only one starter from last year and had only three weeks to prepare for their first game. The first half started off slow for CMA with the team missing a combined 17 layups and 14 turnovers. At halftime, the Spartans held a narrow 14-11 lead. However, the second half was a different story as the Spartan offense began to steamroll over the TKA Lions. The full court pressure defense was too much for Kings as CMA went on a 26-4 run that would prove to be too much for the Lions to overcome. The final score was 43-27 as CMA earned their first win of the season. Elijah Brisson led the way for the Spartans with 20 points. The Spartans next game is at Heathwood Hall on Friday, November 22 at 6pm.

Scoring: Brisson-20, Joffe-8, Suarez-6, Smith-5, May-4

College Preparatory School

What is a College Preparatory School and Why Choose One?

As students and families plan for the future, the question of academic pathways becomes more pressing, and for many, college is a natural goal. In response to this, college preparatory schools offer an environment uniquely structured to prepare students for higher education. But what exactly is a college preparatory school, and how does it differ from traditional public or private schools? Let’s explore the fundamentals of college preparatory education, understand its advantages, and see why such an environment might be the best fit for those with collegiate aspirations.

Defining College Preparatory Schools

A college preparatory (or “prep”) school is an educational institution, typically for students from grades 9-12, designed to equip them with the academic skills and personal growth needed for success in college and beyond. Unlike many traditional high schools, college preparatory schools focus intensively on building a solid foundation in core subjects like mathematics, science, literature, history, and language. However, what truly sets these schools apart is the environment they cultivate, emphasizing discipline, self-management, and academic rigor.

Camden Military Academy, for example, adopts a structured approach, combining robust academics with character development, leadership training, and a focus on discipline. This combination helps students not only prepare for college entrance exams and applications but also develop the skills to thrive once they are there.

Key Benefits of College Preparatory Schools

  1. Rigorous Academic Curriculum Prep schools hold their students to high academic standards, typically offering honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and other advanced courses that mirror college-level work. This exposure helps students develop critical thinking and analytical skills that are vital in college. Camden Military Academy, for instance, provides a challenging curriculum designed to push students beyond rote learning and help them grasp complex concepts that will serve them well in higher education.
  2. Focus on College Admissions and Guidance Navigating the college admissions process can be challenging. Most college preparatory schools provide specialized guidance counselors who work closely with students to help them understand the requirements and strategies for college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. They often offer resources for SAT/ACT preparation and provide opportunities for college fairs, campus visits, and other college-related events. At Camden Military Academy, students benefit from personalized guidance that ensures they can find the college that aligns with their academic and career goals.
  3. Character and Leadership Development College preparatory schools aim to develop the whole person. At Camden Military Academy, this mission includes a structured military environment that instills discipline, self-reliance, and accountability—qualities that prepare students for the independence and challenges of college life. Leadership programs and extracurricular activities are integrated into the school day, giving students the chance to take on responsibilities, manage time, and learn the value of teamwork.
  4. Smaller Class Sizes and Individualized Attention Smaller class sizes allow for more one-on-one time between teachers and students, ensuring that each student receives the attention they need to thrive. Teachers in prep schools, including those at Camden Military Academy, often hold advanced degrees and have extensive teaching experience. They are committed to fostering a supportive environment where students feel motivated and empowered to ask questions, participate actively, and engage deeply with the curriculum.
  5. Holistic Development Through Extracurricular Activities College preparatory schools recognize that education extends beyond the classroom. Many offer a range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, clubs, and special interest groups. These opportunities allow students to explore new interests, build friendships, and develop well-rounded resumes for college applications. Camden Military Academy offers a robust athletics program, ROTC opportunities, and various clubs that contribute to each student’s personal and social growth.

Why a College Preparatory School is an Ideal Choice for College-Bound Students

For students dedicated to achieving success in college, the benefits of a college preparatory school are clear. The rigorous academic curriculum, dedicated guidance, and focus on holistic development ensure that students graduate with the tools needed to navigate the challenges of college life. Moreover, the supportive environment at Camden Military Academy—coupled with its emphasis on discipline and character—makes it an exceptional choice for those looking to gain a competitive edge.
